Welcome to "The Ides Book Club!"
We are a dynamic and eclectic group of fifteen - with some ebbs and flows! Our goal is to read a variety of books. We try to choose books of value that we might not have chosen had it not been for the book club.
We like to include both fiction and non-fiction, Canadian and world, classics and books of current interest.
We meet once a month, and read 10 books a year. At our July meeting (the "AGM"), we choose the favourite book of the previous year, and select books for the upcoming year. We find that, knowing which books are upcoming helps us to locate and share copies, and/or to read a book when the mood strikes.
Before each meeting, we look at a list of questions (often found on the most excellent Reader's Guide series), to facillitate discussion. The questions sometimes encourage thought and discussion - and sometimes are not at all necessary!
After the meeting we receive an email containing a synopsis of our discussion. This is always an appreciated reflection, and a useful overview for those who were unable to attend the meeting. We are grateful to Sara, our ever brilliant and sometimes reluctant secretary for providing these pithy snippets!
